Abstract: By the end of 2004, Wal-Mart had a marginal presence in Germany with 2% in the retail food market.

Even with 91 supercentres, Wal-Mart was facing problems trying to integrate its operations in Germany and was also finding it difficult to adapt itself to the local culture.

Besides, strict government regulations in the retail sector were hampering its expansion.
